What does a studio designed for the AI era look like? In this opening-day keynote, Cecilia Shen will explore how original IP, human creativity, production expertise and proprietary cinematic technology can combine to create a new model for entertainment.

Drawing on Utopai Studios’ approach to AI-enabled, long-form storytelling, the session will examine how content owners, filmmakers and creative partners can develop more ambitious stories, build entertainment worlds at greater scale and bring film, television and digital content to global audiences in new ways.

Launching at MIPCOM CANNES 2026, MIP BrandWorks will connect brands and agencies directly with studios, producers, streamers, creators, IP rightsholders and commissioners to develop, finance and scale entertainment content.

Vertical storytelling is becoming one of the entertainment industry’s fastest-growing business sectors. The programme will also feature an invitation-only Global Microdrama & Vertical Leaders’ Summit and a new Vertical Content Speed Matchmaking category. Designed for breaking true-crime stories, the platform uses AI to produce a motion-picture interpretation and a short-documentary version of a nationally significant case within hours of events unfolding.

Variety Vanguard Award

The Variety Vanguard Award recognises television industry leaders who have made a significant contribution to the global entertainment business and is presented each October by Variety and MIPCOM CANNES at the Palais des Festivals.

This year, we are delighted to recognise the achievements of Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix and one of the most influential executives in global entertainment.

Since joining Netflix in 2016, Bajaria has played a central role in the streaming service’s global expansion, overseeing the acquisition and production of films and television programmes across a multitude of languages and regions. She was appointed Chief Content Officer in 2023, following senior leadership roles at CBS Entertainment and NBCUniversal.

The award will be presented on the opening day of MIPCOM CANNES, Monday 12 October, as media and content executives from around the world gather to explore the future of entertainment, emerging business models and new monetisation opportunities. As part of the presentation, Bajaria will join Variety Co-Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Littleton for an exclusive on-stage interview at the Palais des Festivals.
